Google Celebrates 50 Years of Doctor Who

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the greatest British television show, Doctor Who, Google has put together a doodle to celebrate. It’s not often a pop culture event takes over Google as this one has. This past summer Google London added the Tardis to Google Street view which lead fans of the show to petition for a doodle for the 50th anniversary.

Google listened to the fans and even took it to the next level by developing a game to go with the doodle. In the game you can play as one of the 11 Doctors and you are traveling through time to collect the Google letters which have been stolen by the Daleks. The fun thing about the game is if you die in the game you regenerate as one of the other Doctors.

The game was designed by British Google employee Matthew Cruickshank. Cruickshank has been creating doodles for the site for over a year.

“It’s the first game that I’ve designed,” Cruickshank told The Guardian. “But it’s the technicians and programmers that actually make the game. I just art direct, create the assets, set the visual tone, design the characters, and then do pieces of animation.”

“It was about four months ago that an employee here who’s a massive Doctor Who fan added it to our list of potential doodles. We looked through it and realised that this was something special, a chance to really celebrate a national institution” he added.

It’s really cool that Google choose to celebrate the Doctor for his 50th birthday and I’m sure it was an honor for Cruickshank to be the one to doodle him.

To play the game visit the UK Google page. (not on American page yet will likely be tomorrow).
